African Aquaculture: A sustainable future
Published 3/20/2025

Compassion in World Farming’s first office in Africa launches with a splash this month. Join the Southern Africa office’s opening webinar on 26 March, which will focus on the future of freshwater aquaculture. Bringing together perspectives from aquatic ecology, welfare and environmentalism, fish welfare and industry experts will discuss the global, African and Southern African contexts and outline best practices.
Speakers include renowned aquatic ecologist, Wasseem Emam, the founder, director and lead research at Ethical Seafood Research, an Africa-oriented organisation advancing aquatic animal welfare standards. He will be joined by Alexis Olds, Head of Southern Africa and Santiago Pintos, Research Manager (Aquatic Animals), both from Compassion in World Farming.
The free webinar promises to be a measured yet lively discussion into the myriad issues to be considered when planning the expansion of freshwater aquaculture in Southern Africa. Environmental and animal welfare implications will be explored alongside the economic benefits of managing industry growth sustainably to meet food security challenges.
