New IPES-Food report and event on building food security and resilience through territorial markets
Published 9/10/2024
A new IPES-Food report, Food from Somewhere has been launched, providing a comprehensive overview of resilient close-to-home ‘territorial’ markets that feed billions of people every day – from public markets and street vendors to co-operatives, from urban agriculture to online direct sales, from food hubs to community kitchens.
The report documents the critical contributions of these markets to sustaining producer livelihoods, ensuring access to healthy food for the poorest populations, sustaining cultures and communities, and keeping people fed in the face of shocks.
It urges governments to reinvest in local and regional supply infrastructure, re-localise public purchasing and food security strategies, and curb corporate capture of food systems.
Live online event explores report's findings
An online event is taking place on 19 September at 0900 EST / 1500 CEST, to present the report’s findings and explore the issues in more depth.
The event will be hosted by Raj Patel, IPES-Food expert and research professor at the University of Texas, Austin and will include contributions from other IPES-Food panel members, Jennifer Clapp, also of the University of Waterloo and Shalmali Guttal from Focus on the Global South. There will be regional discussions for Africa, Latin America, South and South East Asia, Canada, USA and Europe. Register for the event here.
