Text On Images Examples

Here are some example of content from emails to demonstrate what is acceptable use of text over images.

Not acceptable use of text on image
The text in the black box is too small for mobile screens
acceptable use of text on image
The text that remains here is big enough for mobile screens

In this example, the smaller text in the black box is rejected because it is not big enough to read on smaller screens. Text embedded in images is not dynamic and so will simply shrink down when viewed on smaller screens. The text that remains is acceptable because it's:

  • big enough to read on smaller screens
  • is permitted as illustrative text and is not essential informative text
logo with small text on image shows poor accessibility
Has informative text too small to read on mobile screens
good example of logo use on an image
Logo now only has text large enough to read on mobile screens

In this example, the smaller text under the logo is rejected because it contains informative text under it which should be displayed as a caption, heading or body copy. Additionally, it is rejected because it is not big enough to read on smaller screens. The text that remains is acceptable because it's:

  • big enough to read the text on smaller screens
  • it is a logo
