Somerfield has a long way to go to improve its farm animal welfare standards. It scored worse than any other participating supermarket on the welfare of laying hens, pigs, turkeys, ducks and geese and also scored badly on the welfare of dairy cattle.
One other big drawback for Somerfield is that its farm animal welfare policies do not always extend to the animals in their supply chain outside of the UK. As a major retailer, Somerfield could make great changes for farm animals if it improved its farm animal welfare policies and practices.
