EGGS

UK retailers are really starting to move on eggs, making their policies more ethical and hen-friendly, in response to clear consumer demand.

HOW DID THEY SCORE?

Our overall winner M&S is the undisputed UK pioneer of major free-range retailing but others are following in their footsteps.

The latest survey has seen Sainsbury’s commit to going cage-free on all shell eggs by 2010, with a further commitment to go cage-free on all own label products containing egg by 2012.

Morrisons has committed to going cage-free on all own label shell eggs by 2010 and Waitrose will be ensuring all own label products contain free-range egg by 2009.  Coop is free-range on own label shell eggs already and will be going cage-free on all own label products containing egg by 2010.

Sadly the two biggest UK supermarkets Tesco and Asda have not made any move away from their policy of stocking eggs from hens in barren battery cages.
