ABOUT THE SURVEY

Compassion in World Farming has produced a detailed UK Supermarket Survey for the last six years. However, this is the first time we’ve provided the results online in a more accessible format.

Benchmarking all major UK supermarkets every two years, using industry knowledge and respected scientific research, the survey is the only one of its kind in the field of farm animal welfare.

As a result it has continued to raise standards for farm animals in the supermarket supply chain and is used widely as a reference point for food companies improving or drafting farm animal welfare policies.

The information presented on this website and in the report is based on the supermarkets’ performance over the period 2006-7 unless otherwise stated.

The star system on the website reflects the supermarkets’ score out of five for their performance in eight main areas: eggs; chicken; turkey, duck & goose; dairy & veal; pigs; sheep & beef cattle; fish and transport and slaughter. Additional factors were scored to calculate the final results. More details on the scoring system used in the 2007 survey are available in Appendix 2.

Download the full report (4MB PDF) with full details on the scoring system. Previous reports are available here.
