Rotten Egg

Take action for Tesco chickens

What you can do

Tesco's policies are causing immense suffering to millions of chickens.

We must end this cruelty now by calling on the UK's largest supermarket to stop selling eggs from caged hens.

"1"Send an ecard to headquarters

Send the Rotten Egg Award e-card below, urging Tesco to end the sale of eggs from caged hens:

Dear Sir Terry Leahy,

I would like to inform you that for failing to take welfare of laying hens seriously I declare Tesco a 'Rotten Egg.' I urge you to review your policy on chicken welfare and make a commitment to stop selling eggs from caged hens.

I am aware that as a result of Tesco policies on chicken welfare, more than a million hens a year are likely to be confined to barren battery cages, a system that is soon to be outlawed by the EU and recognised as cruel by consumers.

I am also aware that other supermarkets like The Cooperative, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have made clear commitments to phase out caged egg production and have received Good Egg Awards from Compassion in World Farming.

Tesco as the leading UK supermarket could provide affordable and ethically sourced eggs to all people and could improve the lives of millions of hens.

It would be great to see Tesco listed as a 'Good Egg' next year.

Yours sincerely...

Tesco IS a Rotten Egg

"2"Award your local store

Download your own certificate to give to Tesco

Don't underestimate the power of local lobbying... it is essential that we continue reminding local Tesco store managers that intensive farming causes animal suffering and that there is a demand for higher welfare produce. Their feedback to Tesco headquarters will be heard!

Download and print our 'Rotten Egg Award' certificate. You can hand this in to your local store shaming their poor policies on hen welfare and urging them to make a commitment to phase out the sale of eggs from caged hens by 2012.

If you would prefer to send the certificate, you can find the address of your local store here: www.tesco.com/storelocator/.
